About Verloren Valei Nature Reserve
Verloren Valei is a Ramsar wetland on the high grassland plateau near Dullstroom in Mpumalanga, one of the few places where all three of South Africa's crane species breed: wattled, blue and grey crowned cranes. It is a reserve for birders and botanists, with mist-belt grassland, orchids and sphagnum wetlands at over 2,000 metres, and access is by appointment through the reserve. There is no accommodation inside; Dullstroom's trout lodges and guesthouses are minutes away, and the reserve is malaria-free.
