Magaliesberg mountains
North West, South Africa
Kgaswane is a North West reserve on the Magaliesberg above Rustenburg, an hour and a half from Johannesburg, protecting a section of the range's cliffs, grassland and wetland. It is a hiking and birding reserve rather than a game park: sable, kudu and mountain reedbuck on the slopes, Cape vultures from the colony nearby, and a vlei that attracts waterbirds in summer. The Peglerae trail is the main day walk, and there is a wilderness camping option for overnight routes. Rustenburg and the Magaliesberg guesthouses provide the accommodation.

Wild places survive when the communities around them earn more from protecting wildlife than from anything that would replace it. Every stay you book through Spekboom carries a conservation contribution built into the price, never added on top, so choosing where you sleep becomes a way to fund the people and projects keeping this landscape intact.
