About Ai-Ais/Richtersveld Transfrontier Park

The Ai-Ais/Richtersveld park joins South Africa's Richtersveld National Park to Namibia's Ai-Ais Hot Springs and the Fish River Canyon, across the Orange River. The South African side is a mountain desert of black basalt, halfmens trees and one of the world's richest succulent floras, held under a contract with the Nama communities who still graze stock there. It is high-clearance 4x4 country: the camps at Sendelingsdrift, Potjiespram, De Hoop and Richtersberg are basic, the roads are rough, and summer heat is dangerous. Come between April and September, carry water, and treat the river camps as the reward for the drive in.
