About this route
The long way up the dry west, on gravel and then on sand, for people who own the vehicle and want to use it: the Rooilande farm tracks outside Laingsburg, the Roggeveld and Sutherland for the darkest sky in the country, the Tankwa Karoo where the park roads are gravel and the campsites sit alone under the escarpment, then north through Namaqualand to Springbok and the Richtersveld, a mountain desert of halfmens trees and river camps that is high-clearance 4x4 only. The camps inside are SANParks, so a night there funds the park directly.
