About Masai Mara National Reserve
The Masai Mara is the Kenyan end of the Serengeti ecosystem, a reserve of open grassland run by Narok County rather than the national parks service, with the river crossings of the wildebeest migration as its headline: the herds are usually in the Mara from about July to October, and the Mara River crossings are the most sought-after sight in Africa. It is a Big Five reserve with strong lion and cheetah populations year-round, and the Maasai-owned conservancies around the reserve offer fewer vehicles and night drives. It is reached by road from Nairobi in about six hours or by light aircraft, and it is a malaria area.
