About this place
Montusi Mountain Lodge is a family-owned 4-star retreat set on a 1 000-hectare estate in the Northern Drakensberg, with full, uninterrupted views of the Amphitheatre escarpment. Every suite is a freestanding building scattered through indigenous gardens for privacy and tranquility, and every room is positioned to catch the spectacular mountain scenery.
The Carte family has run Montusi since 2000. What was once a wattle-infested wasteland has been replanted into a rehabilitated conservation area, and the resulting birdlife and antelope (Mountain Reedbuck, Vaal Rhebok, Bushbuck and the elusive Eland) have returned to the land that was once Bushman territory.
Each suite has a comfortable bedroom with en-suite bathroom, a lounge with TV and limited DSTV, a gas fireplace, and a private patio with panoramic Amphitheatre views. Tea and coffee facilities include French press plungers and a bar fridge for fresh milk. Every need, from hairdryer and mosquito repellent to umbrella and electrical adaptor, is met.
Meals are a highlight. The intimate restaurant with cosy log fireplace serves innovative menus showcasing local cuisine. In summer, breakfast and dinner spill out onto the outdoor Phumleni where the Amphitheatre view enhances every dish. Breakfast and dinner are included for lodge guests; light lunches are available daily 12:30-14:00.
The estate offers a large pool, tennis court, three trout-and-bass-stocked dams, and over 100 km of hiking, running, mountain biking and horse-riding trails, including access to the Drakensberg Trails network direct from your suite. Highlights on the estate include the Bushman Cave with rock paintings, the Waterfall Cave (a bracing summer shower), and the flat-topped Montusi Peak with 360-degree views. The Royal Natal National Park is 20 km away; the 9-hole Amphitheatre Golf Course at Hlalanathi is 8 km; and All Out Adventure Centre is 4 km down the road.
