Chiawa Camp

Chiawa Camp opened the Lower Zambezi National Park to tourism and remains the camp against which others in Zambia are measured. Eight safari tents, all rebuilt in 2022, stand under a canopy of mahogany and winterthorn on the bank of the Zambezi, each with a ceiling fan inside the mosquito net, an indoor and outdoor shower, a ball-and-claw bath and a bench-wallow plunge pool looking onto the river. A separate Safari Suite, refurbished in 2024, adds air conditioning over the bed and space for a family.

The guiding is the point. Chiawa's hand-picked team is repeatedly recognised as among the best in Africa, and the camp runs day and night game drives, walking safaris for guests aged 12 and over, boating on the Zambezi, and catch-and-release angling on artificial lures with barbless hooks. There is no canoeing and no bait fishing here, both deliberate conservation choices, and the camp uses a two-spotlight protocol on night drives, red filters for finding and viewing and soft white only for photography, so wildlife behaves naturally.

The camp is completely off-grid on solar with a generator backup and is certified Climate Positive. There is a main pool, an outdoor gym, a gift shop and a Sleep Out Tower that can be booked in advance for a night under the stars. Rates are per adult per night sharing and include all meals, house beverages and laundry, guided activities and transfers between Chiawa Safaris camps and airfields. Children from 8 years are welcome.
