As lifelong animal and nature lovers who have grown up in the beauty of Zambia, we are deeply committed to conserving and protecting this land for generations to come. We believe in responsible, sustainable land management, safeguarding the wilderness, and supporting the wellbeing of wildlife and working animals. Our focus is on initiatives that are self-motivating and sustainable — empowering communities, preserving nature, and improving the lives of animals.

Through our ecotourism enterprises, we strive to operate with minimal environmental impact while connecting like-minded guests, friends, and families to conservation efforts and the communities we support. The Chundukwa Foundation raises funds and resources for vital projects, building bridges between donors and initiatives in need.

Initiatives We Support

Simalaha Community Trust

We operate Zambian Horseback Safaris in the Simalaha Wildlife & Community Conservancy where we are privileged to be the sole tourism operator. Riders contribute a fee payable per person per night of which 100% proceeds the Trust. Simalaha benefits from concession fees as well as the training and employment of local peoples in the construction and running of the lodge.

Nakawa Community Academy

An extraordinary couple, Cynthia & Silumba, living in the village of Nakawa approximately 70km from Victoria Falls, recognised the need to educate children in remote areas. They set up the Nakawa Community Academy providing two healthy meals per day and free education for 120 children — and growing! The school is supported by onsite vegetable gardens, a curio shop and campsite, with the intention of achieving self-sustainability.

Donkey Welfare

We educate and support neighbouring communities in the kind and responsible ownership of working donkeys, assisting with safe and comfortable harness manufacture, diet and animal husbandry alongside local animal welfare organisations Zambezi Animal Welfare Services (ZAWS) and Zambezi Working Donkey Project. Our long-term goal is to operate a centre for animal husbandry in the Simalaha Wildlife & Community Conservancy.

Hungry Hippo Fund

We are facing an unprecedented drought after the lack of rains in the 2023/2024 Rainy Season. Hippos suffer on the same scale as any other large herbivore during drought periods, requiring a minimum 45kg of grass and 200 litres of water per adult animal every 24 hours. The Hungry Hippo Fund supports emergency feeding and habitat protection.

CSL Detection Dog Unit

In partnership with Working Dogs for Conservation, Conservation South Luangwa introduced Zambia's first ever wildlife detection dog unit in 2014. The dogs and handlers conduct road block and intelligence-based searches, seeking ivory, firearms, ammunition, pangolin, leopard skins, mukula wood and bush meat. From October to December 2021 alone, the K9 team carried out 62 operations leading to 30 arrests and the recovery of 30kg of ivory including 4 elephant tusks.

ZAWS (Zambezi Animal Welfare Services)

A non-profit organisation established in 2014, ZAWS programmes include education, community veterinary outreach, sterilisation and rescue within Livingstone and surrounding communities. ZAWS offers educational programs including presentations at local schools, lectures and interactive sessions, with values of respect and compassion.
