Dempsey's Guest House

Dempsey's Guest House is a long-running, family-owned self-catering guest house in Walmer, the leafy suburb at the centre of Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth). The Dempsey family has been running this licensed establishment since 2007, with the owner-managers living on site. It's the kind of place where service consistency and personal attention matter more than scale.

Five comfortably laid-out rooms sit across a large bird-filled garden, each with its own private entrance, en-suite bathroom and kitchenette. The rooms are stand-alone, with no inter-leading walls, and offer a quiet, private base for travellers. The property runs on a heat-pump water system with solar inverter backup (so load-shedding rarely interrupts the Wi-Fi), and rainwater is harvested for the laundry. Family Room 2 is wheelchair friendly with a ramp from the car park, a roll-in shower and proper grab rails.

The location works for both work and leisure travel: the airport is a short drive away, beaches are 7 km, and the suburb is dense with restaurants, bakeries, pubs and shops within walking distance. Boccadillos, Chingadas, Cobblestone Bakery, The Hussar Grill, the 6th Avenue Shopping Centre, Spar and several cafés are all within 500 m to 2 km. Life St George's Hospital and Netcare Akeso are also nearby.

Dempsey's offers complimentary uncapped Wi-Fi in every room, on-site secured parking (including for medium trailers), OpenView decoders, and tourism information for the rest of Nelson Mandela Bay and the Eastern Cape. The owners are environmentally aware, with no pesticides in the garden, energy-saving lighting, paper, tin, glass and plastic recycling, and water-smart practices throughout. No pets, no smoking and no laundry service.
